A rock guitar is really no different than any other in its construction. Know Your Scales

Any style of guitar music is based upon the same scales and chords. Rock music will use a variation of chords based upon the pentatonic scale. One famous song which is a good example of how the pentatonic scale was used is Hotel California. They walk up and down this scale constantly throughout the song.

Learn rock guitar software is also available, and cheaper than a full course. By doing some research you can find all of the tools needed to make your learning easier and enjoyable. But practice is the most important part of learning.
