Music Royalties Not Paid to Aborigines
A recent program was started in the country of Australia to help artists recoup more profits through the resale of their artistic endeavors and was to be one method in which aboriginal peoples in the country might realize more profits as their works would continuously improve in how much they were worth. But unfortunately there has not been a lot of progress regarding the sales of various artistic works such as paintings, sculptures, production music and visual arts and the profits that were to be realized by native peoples have not yet been a part of their incomes.
So far the levy instituted by the country has been in effect for a year and a half and there are some concerns that artists who reside in the most remote areas of the country aren’t benefiting properly from the tax. A local owner in Perth says that various Aboriginal artists aren’t getting the money they deserve because of issues in how the system was originally set up. He suggests that artists are actually at a disadvantage even though the system was originally meant to make it easier for those individuals to obtain payment for their artistic works.
The gallery owner not only suggests that the artists aren’t getting the right level of payment for their services but that they’re also being cheated out of some of the new royalties that should otherwise belong to them. The issue regarding the payment of royalties concerns when the royalties go into effect. Some are arguing artists should be paid upfront for their art and music instead of after the sale.
